What is “co-occurring disorder” (COD)?

The term “co-occurring disorder” (COD) refers to the condition of having at least one mental health disorder and at least one substance use disorder (SUD)

Did you know that roughly 50% of individuals experiencing a substance use disorder are also experiencing or have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder?

According to recent studies by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), only 7.8% of individuals with COD receive treatment for both conditions in one specialized, integrated program. This means that most substance abuse treatment centers are only focused on treating the substance use disorder, leaving the mental health disorder untreated at the time of discharge.

Huron Lake Recovery Center realizes that it is important to treat the whole person and not only their substance use disorder. We work with our residents to create a comprehensive, individualized plan to treat both disorders to achieve better client outcomes and reduce relapse.
